About

Whimsy, Structure, Lived Experience  My art dances in the in-between.

Hi, I'm Sam Jackson, a self-taught artist based in Melbourne, Australia.

I create from instinct and curiosity — and because I have to. What began years ago as a quiet, private escape has grown into a daily practice and a deeply personal visual language. Art has become my companion and confidante, helping me make sense of the world and my place in it. It expresses my optimism and offers steady comfort during difficult times.

Much of my work appears bright and joyful, often presenting as whimsical scenes inspired by nature, the built environment, and personal experience, or as intuitive arrangements of shapes that balance playfulness with structure. I am drawn to contrasts — for example, the sharpness of black pen linework set against the expressive energy of pastel or paint, and the delicate balance between control and spontaneity.

Sometimes I work on canvas; other times on paper, creating simple pen doodles or combining pen with paint, oil pastel, or collage made from my own artwork — whatever feels right in the moment. I enjoy the freedom of exploring different materials and approaches, allowing each piece to guide my creative choices.

Naturally organised in most areas of my life, my creative process follows a different rhythm: loose and intuitive, guided more by feeling than by formal conventions.

While many of my works appear lighthearted or understated, they often carry deeper emotional undercurrents. I create while reflecting on themes such as family, love, loss, and hope. My personal experiences — including undergoing cancer treatment and caring for my profoundly disabled son — shape the way I see and express things. These influences aren't always visible on the surface, but they live quietly within the work.

Here on my site you'll find works ranging from energetic explorations to contemplative reflections, each offering a glimpse into my creative journey. This space is where I share that journey, raw and real.

Thank you for being here.
