The Big Blue Chair

Pen, oil pastel, watercolour pencil, and original collage, mounted on acrylic-painted paper, 59.4 × 42 cm, 2025

This piece centres on a large blue hospital chair — one I've perched on, curled up in, and slept on many times over two decades while my son was in intensive care.

Pen, paint, and collage echo the monitors, leads, and tubes of the ICU, while washes of yellow capture sunlight as it filters through the windows.

Over the years, the big blue chair has come to symbolise for me sitting tight through uncertainty and holding steady through the unknown.
