The Mouse

Pen, gel pen, acrylic paint, and original collage on paper, 42 × 29.7 cm, c. 2019

This artwork was inspired by my son, whom we affectionately nicknamed "The Mouse" as a baby. The name came from a moment of calm after a seizure, when he lay asleep in his hospital cot like a tiny, curled-up storybook mouse.

Over time, that simple nickname grew into playful songs, silly phrases, a large papier-mâché mouse named Maurice, and countless bonding moments that continue to this day.

This mouse, unlike the delicate storybook mice that inspired his nickname, stands strong and determined, a reflection of the remarkable young man my son has become.
